World Sailing (formerly ISAF) requires sailing yachts in race categories 0, 1, or 2 to carry at least two man overboard marking devices, or Lifebuoys, {OSR § 4.22.2}. Both of these MOB markers must have a satchet of fluorescein dye {OSR § 4.22.2 (c)}.

The dan buoy drogue attaches to grommet and swivel at the dan buoy’s base. For easy attachment of additional devices such as the flourescein dye packet, the SOS Marine dan buoy has an extra grommet attachment point at its base (see photo) so a short length of line may be used to attach one.

The best way to handle the man overboard situation is to prevent man overboard from happening through use of harnesses and strong fastening points or jack lines, which run from bow to stern, or stern to stern via the bow, and the like. The saying, Keep one hand for yourself, reminds the sailor that his safety is his personal responsibility. Risky behavior, ignorance, lack of preparation, lack of anticipation, or stupidity are not rewarded. As of January 1st, 2014, US Sailing Safety Equipment Requirements Man Overboard Equipment § 3.7.2 specifically allows the dan buoy in satisfaction of the requirement to carry a man overboard pole. Other safety gear is also required; the man overboard buoy requirement is just one requirement. The SOS Marine dan buoy also meets the ISAF World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations requirement for a man overboard buoy.
