US Sailing governs USA yacht racing
In its October 19, 2013 meeting, the US Sailing Board approved USSER updates which explicitly state the dan buoy satisfies requirement for man overboard pole on racing sailboats. The updates take effect as of January 1, 2014 and have already been adopted for the 2014 Newport to Bermuda yacht race by its organizing authority.
A boat shall have a man overboard pole and flag, with a lifebuoy, a self–igniting light, a whistle, and a drogue attached. A self–inflating MOB module, Dan Buoy or similar device will satisfy this requirement. Self–inflating apparatus shall be tested and serviced in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications. These items shall be stored on deck, ready for immediate use, and affixed in a manner that allows for aquick release.US Sailing USSER § 3.7.2 effective 2014-04-23
