A fun, overnight offshore yacht race

Recently I met with a man overboard survivor who fell overboard in the 2011 Islands Race off of the southern California coast. The one-on-one meeting allowed me a personal perspective of man overboard survival and the unexpected problems that arise. The race entails sailing from Long Beach to San Diego leaving Catalina and San Clemente Islands to port. Total race length is 129 miles.

US Sailing Says Dan Buoy Satisfies Requirement

US Sailing governs USA yacht racing

In its October 19, 2013 meeting, the US Sailing Board approved USSER updates which explicitly state the dan buoy satisfies requirement for man overboard pole on racing sailboats. The updates take effect as of January 1, 2014 and have already been adopted for the 2014 Newport to Bermuda yacht race by its organizing authority.

Oracle USA Wins America’s Cup

Today’s racing brought an amazing finish to the 2013 America’s Cup with the spectacular comeback by Oracle Team USA. The America’s Cup never ceases to provide a mesmerizing sporting event. As a participant in three America’s Cup series, I am astounded by this year’s event. I was there in 1983 to witness the unbelievable comeback by Australia II. Now, 30 years later, it has been surpassed by one of the outstanding comebacks in sporting history.
