Reelsling is a man overboard recovery device for everyday boaters. It helps you draw an MOB back alongside a boat, then lift him back onboard. It is best suited to retrieve a fully conscious, uninjured crew day or night. It has abundant SOLAS light–reflective tape around its perimeter to enhance findability by searchlight. Man Overboard Survival Story to Learn From

A fun, overnight offshore yacht race

Recently I met with a man overboard survivor who fell overboard in the 2011 Islands Race off of the southern California coast. The one-on-one meeting allowed me a personal perspective of man overboard survival and the unexpected problems that arise. The race entails sailing from Long Beach to San Diego leaving Catalina and San Clemente Islands to port. Total race length is 129 miles.

This man overboard survivor, who was sailing on a 50′ yacht, shared his story with me with the hope it may help save a life in the future. Continue reading →

Danbuoy Strobe Test and Replacement

As part of your annual man overboard gear inspection routine, check your danbuoy strobe. The SOLAS strobe on the danbuoy is not manufactured to accommodate servicing. The strobe’s long life battery is permanently installed. Should the strobe fail inspection, or reach the end of its five year lifespan, replace the strobe.
